Hello. My name is Derek Patton Pearcy. Starting on the 14th anniversary of moving to California, I realized that I had some things I wanted to write down. What you see here now is essentially a memoir, called Going to California.
I began writing at the end of 2013’s August, posting two or three times a week for about two months. Over the next three months, I only posted six or seven times, but for two months after that I surprised myself by writing 1,000-3,000 words every day.
As of early April, I’m more than two-thirds of the way through the story. With any luck it should be done by the end of May. We’ll see how it goes.
How cool. Just discovered your blog. It’s very cool to find another perspective from that era from someone who has so many connections to the Dallas/Austin tech world that has always seemed to have this underlying influence over so much of the industry. I was part of the generation just after yours, doing our best to hack the planet and trying to not sell out when those offers from people like IEX, Cyrix, I2 and McAffee came pouring in. It stilll amazes me that usenet, bit torrent, soulseek, and the ever present threat of DDoS all came from that short 2 year window… cheers.
